The promotion that happened when I stopped working after 5pm and started focusing on my life...
What if working less is the only way to lead more?
Grows Us

A friend called me recently, asking how to thrive in the corporate grind without burning out. It made me look back.

Years ago, I wanted a promotion badly. My recipe? Work until 2 to 3am, wake up to nurse my first newborn son, rush to the office, and repeat. I thought burning the candle at both ends was the only way to have it all.

Instead, it burned my joy. I grew sharp and angry. I started seeing darkness in my team instead of hope.

Then, my mother held up a mirror. She looked at me and said,

"Pim, you have changed. The people you are complaining about are your friends. Stop those and start calibrating yourself."

Those words woke me up.

I made a radical choice: a hard stop at 5pm. NO excuses and NO exceptions. Then after 5pm, it was time to spend with my son, my family and my life...

With less time, I was forced to prioritize. I stopped managing every tiny detail and focused only on the roots—the few deep actions that actually move the needle, and the people who hold the floor. I started breathing again.

Two months later, to my surprise, I got the promotion to lead a massive team.

The feedback? They didn't praise my hustle or my impact. They praised my balance. They wanted a leader who could model longevity for others.

When you narrow your focus, you expand your impact.

I am deeply grateful to my mother. She had the courage to speak the truth when I was too blind to see it.
